Sara Vidal
Meet Sara Vidal or better known as “the queen of the elotes.” Since the launch of the Mercado, Sara began by selling elotes. As a result, people came to expect them and often asked for them, later also craving esquites.
Due to their popularity, Sara decided to continue selling her elotes and esquites at the Mercado. It was only a matter of time before Sara came to be known as the Queen of the Elotes. Sara greatly appreciated the title and feels it’s a tremendous compliment.
“The best time in the Mercado is the smell. It makes me travel back to various parts of my childhood. I don’t want to miss this moment.”
For Sara, her participation in the Mercado is very valuable because it reminds her of her childhood, when she was 9 years old: “The best time in the Mercado is the smell. I don’t want to miss this moment.” Her main reason for continuing to sell elotes and esquites is to maintain the tradition and customs of her people. Sara comments that “the aromas make us travel to our villages and remember things from our childhood.”
